Indicators for the Kunming – Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Kunming-Montreal biodiversity package of decisions at the UN Biodiversity Conference (December 2022). These include the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to catalyze, enable, and galvanize urgent and transformative action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, to achieve the outcomes it sets out in its Vision, Mission, Goals, and Targets (see CBD/COP/DEC/15/4); and the associated global monitoring framework, which aims to provide consistent, standardized, and scalable tracking of the global Goals and Targets (see CBD/COP/DEC/15/5).

The monitoring framework for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a set of headline, binary, component and complementary indicators for use in national biodiversity strategies and action plans and national reports. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity endorsed the technical updates to the headline and binary indicators at COP 16 (see CBD/COP/DEC/16/31).

The metadata contains a summary of the methodology for the indicator, including the computation methods, guidance on possible disaggregations, information on data compilation processes, available data sources, and additional references and guidance material. It also includes guidance on the implementing of Section C of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework The metadata currently provided is based on the document prepared by the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Indicators (CBD/COP/16/INF/Rev.1).

NOTICE:

  • For headline indicator 7.2, Parties may choose to report on pesticide environment concentration and/or aggregated total applied toxicity, depending on the availability of methodology and in accordance with their national circumstances and technical capacities. At present the metadata currently provided is for Aggregated total applied toxicity.
  • Headline indicator 22.1 metadata based on the document prepared by the Ad Hoc Open-ended Intersessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD/SBSSTA/26/INF/11).
